That Escalated Quickly: Web Host WP Engine + WordPress Need to Hug It Out
It's not very often in an election year that my social feed gets dominated by ... WordPress.
2024 continues to surprise.
When I heard about the WordPress brouhaha over the weekend, I didn't think it was an issue for here (let alone my clients).
Long story short, at a WordPress conference, the WordPress co-founder, called out WP Engine (website hosting).
BUT... the situation has gone nuclear 💥.
I saw a client's site lost connection with the WordPress.org servers. The client uses WP Engine.
It's a huge problem when you see this:

I verified the issue on WP Engine.
WordPress has banned WP Engine from free use of its resources due to pending litigation.
No WordPress updates, no new plugins, themes. Security risks and stalled development.
|
|
|
|
What to Do: Wait & See
If your website uses WP Engine, this is something to watch and be aware of, but it's not a time to panic.
The hosting sharks are circling. You'll likely start being wooed by other companies.
Your best bet is to login to your account, have a chat with customer service, talk to your web developer, or check the WP Engine status website.
Hopefully cooler heads will prevail.
BUT... if it persists for more than, say 4-6 weeks, you'll have no choice but to switch web hosts.

Yesterday, Squarespace unveiled Refresh, a "new era" for entrepreneurs. It's a laundrylist of its updates including AI-infused design, and updates to content, memberships, payments, and more. We've been critical of Squarespce Domains, but the website builder continues to improve.
