Convertkit (Accidentally!) Delivers A Masterclass On How NOT to Rebrand

A couple of weeks ago, ConvertKit, a well-known and popular email marketing platform for content creators, announced they were rebranding in public as Kit.

  • No logo

  • No public cutover date/plan

  • Only vague generalities about "scalability and giving you the actionable insights you need to grow your business" ...

Cue the jokes (my favorite is the Knight Rider 🏎️ reference).

ConvertKit is a $30+ million/year company. If it wants to rebrand in public ... they'll be fine.

BUT ... it's not good modeling for its customers.

TBH I'm waiting for the new rebranding in public trend. πŸ™„

Branding is messy.

Rebranding ... don't get me started. Messaging, art, designs ... small businesses find remnants for years.

I've been through it myself.

Foster Growth (my favorite!) -> Jen McFarland Consulting (for about 6 mos.) -> Women Conquer Business (now).

I found a Jen McFarland Consulting reference last week. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

As I said, messy.

IMHO, this is definitely a case of just because the big dogs do it doesn't mean you should.

Rebranding takes time.

Like a fine wine, let it sit for a while.

Then methodically roll it out.

This Newsletter Growth Trend Is Straight from Wall Street

Read the article to learn about audience arbitrage. Whaaat? If you haven't noticed, there are tons of newsletter referral programs cropping up (via Convertkit (Kit!), SparkLoop, Beehiiv, etc.).

Primer on audience arbitrage: Business A runs newsletter subscriber ads. When you opt-in, they'll suggest you subscribe to multiple newsletters. Then Business A gets paid a 'co-registration' referral fee for each subscription.

My take: audience arbitrage is gross affiliate marketing. Short-term gain, lost trust. Anecdotally, I've heard even legit referrals via SparkLoop, etc. don't produce long-term subscribers. Use care.
